Comcast's collections people called me again today. No, not for the same issue, but for a _different_ one related to my move.

Apparently, when you move, they turn off your autopay-by-credit card, but they don't actually update any of their systems to this effect. They just stop charging you. The website still says "paid by autopay" and they continue to not send you statements.

Thankfully the agent was much more polite this time around (especially that I was prepared for another battle over my cable cards) and they reversed the late fee (and I've resetup the autopay stuff).

Monopolies suck.

DirecTivo is (a) (effectively?) discontinued and (b) didn't work at my old place due to LOS issues, so I am now weded to a Tivo 3.

After I moved, I got about 10 phone calls a day about satellite dishes that I could buy... maybe I need to send those people your way. ;)

We have an even worse problem with Verizon. We have three services with Verizon - copper phone line, business-grade FiOS Internet, and FiOS television. The copper phone line shows up in the online account management system, and is associated with a credit card and all is good. The business-grade FiOS cannot be paid by credit card or online, but they send a bill every month and I write them a check. That's fine. The FiOS television is a different story entirely.

About two weeks after the service was installed, it stopped working entirely. I called to ask why, and they told me it was because there was no credit card associated with the account. Then they told me they couldn't associate a credit card with the account unless I could give them my account number. When I told them I don't have an account number because they never sent me a bill, they asked for the amount of my last payment for verification. We had to go through a whole dance to figure out exactly what "last payment" they were talking about - turns out it was the Business FiOS Internet payment. Eventually, I got my credit card set for auto-pay. I have still never seen a paper bill, nor can I create an online account to view it online.

So yeah, I agree. Monopolies suck - even when the service they offer is technically a competitive service.
