Watching the second Matrix movie today ... In the freeway chase scene at one (well, several, actually) points there is a clear shot of one of those distance to exit signs:

Whipple Ave 1/2
Woodside Road 1 1/2
Marsh Road 3 1/4

I'm not sure about the distances, but that's very likely an actual sign from just north of Redwood City on 101 south (not "The 101" as they call it in the movie, of course).

Anyone know if the designers of the freeway set were from the bay area? (I thought most of the movie was shot in Sydney)

UPDATE: IMDB steals my thunder, sigh: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0234215/trivia (search for "whipple")

I'm sure Ben can give you a more definative answer, but I thought most of the freeway shots were done in Alameda and some non-freeway shooting was done in Oakland.

Yeah, looks like the car chase bits were done in Oakland, though most of the rest was in Sydney (and I know they built most of the freeway themselves):

I believe the major constraint was they couldn't get good enough or maybe just enough stunt drivers to do the car chase stuff in Australia. Incidently, I think some of the buildings in the background of the highway shots are also actual buildings from San Fran. They added a bunch more fakes I guess.

Everyone in LA calls it "the 101", I don't know what's wrong with you bay area types ;)

California people call shit "the ___" rather than just "___" or "route ___" or "highway ___". I don't get it, but I refuse to participate when I'm over there.

That's only southern california. I've been told its because in northern california a road is a road, but in southern california a road is an experience.
