Tried to fly the bay tour with an instructor today. We went over the charts, picked a rough route, and off we went. Not 500' in the air and we could see that the city was totally fogged in. Back down on the runway at palo alto we went.
I talked to my previous instructor about this, and he recommended checking traffic cams before you go, so I'll be sure to do that next time.
It wasn't a total loss, it was good to discuss the likely transitions and ATC interactions with someone, as opposed to just reading about it.
In other news, I'm planning a flight Monday up to Sacramento to look at couch replacements, and then down to Harris Ranch again where I may or may not buy some steaks (I'm told there is a cow 'death camp' along I-5 somewhere where they don't take good care of the cows before feeding them to people -- I didn't notice Harris being like that last time I was down there though). It'll be a good amount of flying all told, if I make the whole trip.
Finally, I got a book of California airports today, and it looks like there is a steakhouse at Napa County airport, which is pretty close by (that is, its only up to the north bay), and might be worth a trip some evening before it starts getting dark early again.. (I'm not night current, so I can't take passengers at night, and I'm not sure I would want to even if I could until I have a bit more experience).
