So, last night my DSL went out. Apparently "scheduled maintenance" but it didn't come back until I called them at 9am to tell them it was still out. Apparently they had "some issues" with finishing it up.

Also I woke up early to meet the satellite installer-- who showed up, and within about 5 seconds told me "no satellite for you" and spent the next 10 minutes basically laughing at me for deigning to think I might be able to put a dish there. Of course, he did this by looking and not by any experimental means.

Of course, had I known the requirements list he was using (30' of clearance in a particular 60 degree arc or so) before I bought the dish, instead of being told "sure, you can shoot through a small opening between trees" by best buy) I wouldn't have wasted my time. I even explicitly asked before going through the whole thing.

So if DirectTV is listening: Train your sales reps better and find installers with better attitudes.

Now I have to wait for someone else (such as TiVo!) to come out with a generic HD DVR. Or maybe Comcast will realize that there's a demand for this stuff. Grrr.

Side note -- I like the new livejournal entry interface.

More satellites, man. More satellites.

Seriously, though - sorry to hear it. ;) I can't believe it's 2004 and our television dreams can still be thwarted by a single ill-placed tree or unfortunate balcony placement. Whatever happened to the future?

Ironically part of the problem is you already need to see 3 satellites to get HD to work, so adding more will only make it worse (provided they add content as well, and this isn't just for better coverage).

Tower?

You into ham radio at all? Is putting up a radio tower anything close to a realistic option?

DirecTV really does need to improve their pool of installers. I know someone who's been jerked around by a dish installer for well over a full month now. Keeps getting rescheduled. They suck. If only the DirecTiVo weren't so excellent...

Re: Tower?

No, it isn't, given restrictions placed on me by my landlord (they have a specific set of sattelite tv clauses).
